Microsoft cuts 4,800 jobs: Xbox downsizes, spins off four gaming studios

Microsoft announced on Monday, July 06, 2026, that it is immediately eliminating 4,800 jobs, representing 2.1% of its global workforce, in a cost-cutting effort tied to its artificial intelligence strategy.
Its Xbox division will lose approximately 20% of its staff, with 1,600 roles cut on July 06 and an additional 1,600 exiting through fiscal year 2027, totaling 3,200 Xbox job reductions.
As part of the restructuring, four gaming studios are spinning off: Compulsion Games and Double Fine Productions will become independent, while Ninja Theory and Undead Labs have entered terms to join new ownership.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma confirmed the studio divestitures in an email to employees.
Microsoft’s stock fell 1.4% following the announcement, contributing to a 23% decline in the first half of 2026.
