Google Cloud unleashes new AI chips to take on Nvidia’s dominance

Google Cloud announced its eighth-generation TPUs on April 22, 2026, splitting them into two specialized chips: the TPU 8t for model training and TPU 8i for inference.
The new chips deliver up to 3x faster training, 80% better performance per dollar, and support clustering of 1 million+ TPUs.
While positioned to compete with Nvidia, Google is supplementing rather than replacing Nvidia’s infrastructure and has committed to offering Nvidia’s Vera Rubin chip later in 2026.

GOOGLE CLOUD ANNOUNCES EIGHTH-GENERATION TPUs ON APRIL 22, 2026

Google is making AI infrastructure more specialized, not less dependent on Nvidia.

🔴 Google Cloud split its eighth-generation TPUs into two chips: TPU 8t for training and TPU 8i for inference.

🔴 The company says TPU 8t delivers up to 3x faster training and 80% better performance per dollar, which makes cost and throughput part of the same conversation.

🔴 Google also says the new chips support clustering of 1 million+ TPUs, while still committing to offer Nvidia’s Vera Rubin chip later in 2026.

For engineers, data scientists, and enterprise IT teams, the message is clear: Google Cloud is expanding the AI hardware menu, not closing it.
